Fishing Up Magikarp: A Crochet Round Up

I will admit it. I am one of those Pokemon People. I have spent more hours than I care to admit to playing Pokemon and I have developed a relationship with Flaaffy. Flaaffy is probably my favourite Pokemon, with Magikarp coming in a close second. Before anyone asks, I have a friend that gives me a ton of grief over Magikarp because, well, he’s pretty useless.

Don’t worry, Magikarp, I still love you. In fact, that is what today’s round up is all about. Magikarp. So let’s get started in giving this poor karp some love and attention crochet style.

I am going to start with some shameless self promotion. This applique is my own crochet design that is making up the first square in a Pokemon afghan I am working up. I had to start with Magikarp because…well, Magikarp. I am on a serious Magikarp kick right now…obviously.

This etsy listing for a life-sized Magikarp is really what started this latest round of Magikarp obsession. That is 3 feet of crocheted Magikarp. I went up to Michael’s today and bought what orange Lilly’s Sugar ‘n Cream they had left. I really hope no one else needs any. The pattern doesn’t state how much yarn is needed so I hope I have enough. The last time they put a yarn colour in this particular bin, once it was gone they didn’t order anymore. I think it’s for the ‘unpopular’ colours that the store doesn’t sell a lot of where they can get rid of it to make room for something else

Also on Etsy is this is the pattern for this truly remarkable and glorious crocheted Magikarp hat. You know, you can get a hat similar to this now in Pokemon Go. I call it my Lucky Magikarp Hat. I don’t know how lucky it really is, it doesn’t catch me more Magikarp. It’s still awesome because who doesn’t want to wander around wearing a hat that looks like a karp is eating your head?

Next up, a crocheted Magikarp bag/pouch. This is currently among my 101 WIPs that I am doing at the moment. I don’t require a large purse and this would be perfect. Yes, I know, I have the awesome chicken purse, and as much as I love it, it’s on the large side for my needs. I seriously don’t understand all the stuff women shove in their purse. I just need my keys, wallet, rx sunglasses, phone, business cards (that I always forget that I have and never hand out), my inhaler (because allergies suck) and optional pen. I don’t understand the need to carry around 3 dozen other things.

If you need a larger bag to carry all your stuff, there is this crocheted Magikarp bag. I’m not sure how much stuff you would need to fill it, but part of me thinks it would be funny to hand it over at the grocery store as a reusable bag when picking up a couple items. I’m just like that though.

These Magikarp slippers are so on my list of things to make. I am probably going to need more orange yarn. Anyway, the only reason I haven’t gotten to them yet is I find working on crochet slippers annoying. They are never sized right and I have to do major adjustments. That means making it as written, trying it on, then taking it out and adjusting the size. Annoying.

Can’t have a Magikarp round up without a stuffed Magikarp. Strangely, I haven’t found many patterns for amigurumi karp. You would think there would be a ton of them. Nope. Everyone keeps their Magikarp patterns secret. There is one other on Etsy here.

Now go forth and crochet all the Magikarps. You know, if you get enough of them you may be able to evolve it into Gyarados…

Thank you for the feature! You can pack a fair bit into this bag – I made it for a friend who uses it a lot. She says it gets a lot of positive attention!
