Yes, I know, Follow Friday is a bit late. Okay, a lot late. It’s still before midnight in California XD. Seriously though, it’s been a bad pain day and it’s taking every ounce of energy I have to toss together a blog post. I’ve only been awake a couple hours and I am ready to go back to bed. Pain takes a lot of out of a person.
Today I want to introduce everyone to the blog Maria’s Blue Crayon.
This is one of those blogs that until the other day I didn’t realize how often I ended up on it. She’s getting ready to start a Christmas Afghan Crochet-A-Long. In fact, afghans are kind of her thing. She makes these amazing afghans with appliques on them..and her appliques actually look like the animals they are supposed to. I’ve run across a number of appliques that sort of look like the animal it’s supposed to be, if you look at it from a distance through one eye and squint. I am not going to criticize anyone’s art. Everyone has their own style and does their own thing. Just because something isn’t my thing, doesn’t mean it won’t be someone else’s. That is the cool thing about art (in this case, the art of crochet) is that there are enough people designing enough things that there is something to make everyone happy.
Obviously, Maria’s style agrees with me, otherwise I wouldn’t be talking about it. But, back to the afghans. So far there are two that she has shared, a woodland animal afghan and an ocean life afghan.
She offers the patterns for free, but you can also support her by buying PDFs of the patterns that are designed for printing.
The appliques that she has made for these can be used for so many different things. In fact, I have abused the shark applique and turned it into a hair accessory and a pin that I can wear on my clothes…because, you know, sharks. I plan on doing this with a few more of the appliques. If I were a really mean person I take and use the squirrel one and make a squirrel pillow for a friend of mine who has a mild case of sciurophobia. This is what happens when you live in a country that has no squirrels and you visit the US where the one squirrel you come across is rather demanding in expecting humans to give it food.
There are a few other odds and ends over at Maria’s Blue Crayon but the afghans and their appliques will keep you coming back as you find more and more uses for the appliques.
Check out and follow Maria’s Blue Crayon!
